5 apprenticeship facts

Started college, sixth form or university and changed your mind? Consider kick-starting your career with an apprenticeship.

Here are 5 useful facts to help you make your decision:

1) More of us are choosing an apprenticeship than ever before. In 2015/16, there were 509,400 apprenticeship starts – that’s 9,500 more than the previous year.*

2) The minimum wage for an apprentice is on the up. From April 2017, it will increase to £3.50 an hour, which means more money in your pocket.

3) Research shows that nearly a third of graduates now earn less per hour than the average worker who has gone down the apprenticeship route, proving that a degree isn’t necessarily the most valued route into work.

4) There is plenty of opportunity to progress. A Level 3 qualification can lead to a Higher Apprenticeship – and, according to a recent study by ICM Research, a Higher Apprenticeship makes you “25 per cent more employable”:https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/464572/2015_Employer_guide_to_higher_apprenticeships.pdf than those who choose an alternative path into employment.*

5) A report has proven that apprentices boost organisational productivity by up to £10,000 a year, which means that your trade-specific skills are making a valuable contribution to the success of the company.*
