What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is an employed member of staff who receives on and off the job training so you can learn and pick up recognised qualifications as you go. If you live in England, are over 16 and not in education you can apply. They take between one and four years to complete and cover 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from things like engineering to administration, from hairdressing to construction.

What are the entry requirements of an apprenticeship?

Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements. However the most important are:

  • You must be living in England
  • You must not be in part time or full time education
  • You must be aged 16 or over (those aged 14 or 15 can apply and their details will be held on our system)

What time of year can I start?

As soon as you have an employer willing to take you on as an Apprentice you can start your Apprenticeship – unlike school or college you don’t have to wait until September to start on an Apprenticeship programme!

Do I get paid?

Yes. From 1 April 2017, the National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £3.70 an hour for those aged 16-18 or 19 and in the first year of their apprenticeship.

If you are 19 or over and have completed the first year of your apprenticeship, your employer must pay you the National Mimum Wage rate for your age bracket. For more information, click here to visit the government website.

Do I get holidays?

Like most other employees, you will be given at least 20 days’ paid holiday per year plus bank holidays.

What does each programme involve?

It includes the following components (some of which are not applicable depending on which apprenticeship you are undertaking):

  • Guaranteed employment from day one
  • Knowledge-based Certificate
  • Diploma to validate your practical skills
  • Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Accreditation
  • Maths, English and ICT Qualifications
  • CSCS – Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment Test
  • Paediatric First Aid or Emergency First Aid Training
  • Health and Safety Certified Course
  • Interview Skills
  • Equality and Diversity Awareness

How long does it take?

The length of an apprenticeship varies depending on the prior skill level of the apprentice, the qualifications being obtained and industry sector. Generally apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete.

The apprentice must learn and demonstrate the following:

  • Independent enquiry
  • Creative thinking
  • Reflective Learning
  • Team Working
  • Self-Management
  • Effective Participation
