Hobby Horse Day Nursery are looking to take on an apprentice to join their friendly team in Plympton.

The Apprentice’s Role

The successful apprentice will help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use.

The role will require you to support and update record keeping on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered whilst in your care.

As a child care apprentice, you will play an active part in the development of the children in your care so you will be expected to have excellent observational and communication skills. Supporting, observing and monitoring children’s play is crucial to support socialisation skills with other children and adults, and can include activities such as reading to children, teaching simple painting and drawing skills, taking part handicrafts or singing songs.

Working Hours: Your working hours will be 30-40 hours per week, 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday, but these may vary according to the needs of the setting.

Wages: £148.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Hobby Horse Day Nursery is an family run child care setting in Plympton, Plymouth, which is a purpose designed, spacious and colourful environment. The setting has excellent facilities to support children to achieve their future goals and create positive memories.

The nursery has been well established over 11 years and during this time they have built excellent relationships with very loyal customers and prepared many children for their first steps into school.

Child Care provision at Hobby Horse Day Nursery caters for 0-5 years and pre-school children, and is open from 8.15 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. Hobby Horse Day Nursery is positioned in the Chaddlewood area of the Plympton and has excellent transport links, making it very easy to access.

Past Apprentices

Hobby Horse Day Nursery has had many apprentices in the last 11 years and the owners are very keen on training and supporting their apprentices to achieve the apprenticeship at Level 2, and progressing them onto to an advanced apprenticeship at Level 3.

On completion of the Level 2 qualification, you will become a qualified child care assistant, and you will be given the opportunity to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship, which will set you up for a continued career in the child care sector. Hobby Horse Day Nursery has a very high success rate and offers permanent employment after the completion of apprenticeship.

Skills Required

You will have excellent communication skills with both adults and children. You will be reliable, hardworking and have the ability to follow procedures. You must also be able to work as part of a team and use your own initiative.

Great leadership and organisational skills are important for this role. You must be confident and have the ability to work under pressure and have great problem solving skills.

Personal Qualities

The apprentice will need to be fun, reliable, outgoing and have a willingness to learn in a busy nursery that is focussed on providing high quality child care. You will need to be enthusiastic, responsible, and keen to succeed.

Prior Qualifications

No qualifications are required for this role.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
