Ladybirds Day Nursery is a well-established and experienced childcare provider who have just come under new ownership and are looking for a child care apprentice to join their team.

The Apprentice’s Role

You will be expected to work within the team to ensure the smooth day to day organisation and safety of all children. As an apprentice, you will be expected to have excellent observation and communication skills and play an active part in the development of the children in your care. You will also be a key worker to a group of children where you will play a big part in their development and overall learning journey.

You will help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use, and model excellence whilst you assist in serving snacks and refreshments to children. You must also be a great team player and have excellent standards of personal hygiene and appearance, be reliable and model positive behaviour at all times.

Working Hours: The working hours will be 30 hours a week from 11-6, with an hour for lunch, Monday to Friday.

Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Ladybirds Day Nursery is a childcare setting in the heart of Brixton, (5 minutes away from Plymstock). Established in 2001, the nursery provides a friendly, caring and safe learning environment to children from 3 months up to 5 years.

As of September 2015, the nursery will come under new ownership. The new owners, Janine and Vicki, promise to continue to deliver high quality childcare to the community. The existing owner has built an excellent nursery, and with the existing staff, they look forward to maintaining these high standards and developing the nursery further to help it reach its full potential. This includes operating a breakfast and after-school club at the nursery.

Past Apprentices

The nursery has had apprentices in the past who have become fully qualified members of the team.

On completion of your Level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to developing your skills, experience and knowledge further within the working environment by completing a Level 3 qualification.

The employer is very committed to staff development and training, and to assist the successful apprentice to progress through all their training, with a view to future employment.

Skills Required

The successful candidate needs to be outgoing and able to work using their own initiative. You will need an interest in the needs of young children, have the ability to work as part of a team and understand the importance of confidentiality.

You will need to have good communication skills when dealing with children and adults, and be reliable and hardworking. The successful candidate must have great leadership and organisational skills, and be confident in everything they do. You must have the ability to work well under pressure, as well as possess good problem solving skills and flexibility in your approach to work.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant will need to be highly reliable and extremely patient, with a kind, fair and supportive approach to be able to work effectively in this child care setting. You must be able to work with other adults and be able to demonstrate good teamwork skills, and when required, have the ability to work alone in an organised and focused manner.

An ability to communicate well with children, staff and parents is also essential.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A-C in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

All aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
