Little Ones Childcare are looking to recruit an apprentice to join their team in Bovey Tracey.

The Apprentice’s Role

The successful apprentice will work within the team to ensure the smooth day-to-day organisation and the safety of all children.

As a child care apprentice, you will be expected to have excellent observational and communication skills and will play an active part in the development of the children in your care. You will help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use, and model excellence whilst you assist in serving snacks and refreshments to children.

You be a great team player and have excellent standards of personal hygiene and appearance, be reliable and model positive behaviour at all times.

Working Hours: You will be working 35 hours per week, over four days. Shifts will be discussed with the employer.

Wages: £138 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Little Ones at Honiton is a purpose built nursery, designed to care for just 33 children per day aged from 3 months to 5 years. They have 2 separate play rooms and access to both an all weather play area and a lawned garden. Little Ones is a large organisation who has been operating since 2006 with an outstanding Ofsted.

Past Apprentices

This employer has previously taken on apprentice, some of which are now advancing their careers within the organisation.

On completion of your level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills, experience and knowledge further within the working environment by completing a level 3 qualification.

The employer is very committed to staff development and training. They will assist the successful apprentice to progress through all of the training, with a view to future employment.

Skills Required

The succesful candidate will be outgoing and able to work using your own initiative. As an apprentice, you will have an interest in the needs of young children and have the ability to work as part of a team and understand the importance of confidentiality.

You will have good communication skills when dealing with children and adults, and will be reliable and hardworking.

You must have great leadership and organisational skills and be confident in everything you do. You will have the ability to work under pressure, as well as possess good problem solving skills and flexibility in your approach to work.

Personal Qualities

The successful apprentice will need to be highly reliable and extremely patient, with a kind, fair and supportive approach to be able to work effectively in this child care setting.

As an apprentice, you must be able to work with other adults and be able to demonstrate good teamwork skills, and where required, have the ability to work alone in an organised and focused manner.

An ability to communicate well with children, staff and parents is essential.

Prior Qualifications

GCSE A – C grades are desirable since the employer is looking for an apprentice who will advance onto the level 3 apprenticeship, directly after completion of their level 2 qualification.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
