Plymbridge Nursery School and Children’s Centre are currently looking for two apprentices to join their enthusiastic and hard working team.

The Apprentice’s Role

The role will require you to support and update records for individual children, including daily observations and information about activities and meals served. You will be expected to follow their policy for confidentiality and to report appropriate information regarding children and their backgrounds to the Day Care Leader. You must ensure you take into consideration the individual needs of the children respecting race, religion and culture, whilst also having an awareness of social needs and being sympathetic to their emotional needs.

Other daily responsibilities will include keeping equipment and materials clean and tidy and replenishing as necessary. You will also be involved in preparing and setting out activities, materials and resources in co-operation with other staff and sharing responsibility of presenting the children’s work on display.

As a child care apprentice, you will play an active part in the development of the children in your care so you will be expected to have excellent observational and communication skills. Supporting, observing and monitoring children’s play is crucial to support socialisation skills with other children and adults. This can include activities such as reading to children, teaching simple painting and drawing skills, taking part in arts and crafts or singing songs.

You will help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use.

Working Hours: Shift patterns will vary according to rota but they will be between 7.45 – 18.15 and the suitable candidate will work 37 hours per week.

Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Plymbridge Nursery School and Day Care is a well established child care setting in Estover, Plymouth, which is a purpose designed, spacious and colourful environment, which has excellent facilities to support children to achieve their future goals and create positive memories.

The nursery has been well established for over 25 years. The nursery offers one to one support, outreach home visiting, baby groups, toddler groups and much more. Their aim is to support families and offer a range of opportunities to enable the best start for children under 5.

The child care provision at Plymbridge Nursery School and Day Care caters for 0-5 years, and operates from 7.45am until 6.15 pm. The setting is positioned in the Estover and therefore has excellent transport links, making it very easy to access.

Past Apprentices

Plymbridge Nursery School has had many apprentices in the last 25 years; they are very keen on training and supporting their apprentices to achieve the apprenticeship at level 2 then progressing them onto to an advanced apprenticeship at level 3.

On completion of the level 2 you will become a qualified child care assistant, and you will be given the opportunity to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship, which will set you up for a continued career in the child care sector.

Skills Required

The suitable candidate will be caring and passionate about looking after children. They will need to be able to communicate with children and adults, be reliable and hardworking. Have an ability to follow procedures, to work as part of a team and be able to use their own initiative.

Great leadership skills, organisational skills and confidence are all essential. You must also have an ability to work under pressure, as well as good problem solving skills and flexibility. The ideal candidate must have enthusiasm, dedication and a genuine love of children.

Personal Qualities

The apprentice will need to be fun, reliable, outgoing and have a willingness to learn in a busy nursery that is focused on providing high quality child care. You will need to be enthusiastic, responsible, and keen to succeed.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A-E in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

All aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
