Rockatots Nursery is a nursery situated in a historical old building in the Crownhill area of Plymouth. They have a fantastic opportunity for a motivated, creative apprentice to join their experienced team.

The Apprentice’s Role

The successful applicant will be ensuring the smooth running of the organisation on a day to day basis. They will be making sure the children are safe and secure at all times when on the premises. You will be expected to have excellent observational skills as you will be working in close proximity of children at all times. You must have good communication skills as you will be playing an active part in the development of the children in your care. You will be a key worker to a group of children where you will play a big part in their development and learning journey whilst they are at Rockatots.

You will be helping the children to understand and demonstrate good hygiene and personal habits during meal times as these are skills they will need for the rest of their lives. You will also be helping to understand rest periods and bathroom use all whilst you must model excellence when assisting your colleagues. Serving snacks to and refreshments to the children will also play a big part in your time at Rockatots as you will be needed to help at meal times.

You be a great team player and have excellent standards of personal hygiene and appearance, be reliable and model positive behaviour at all times.

Working Hours: Typical hours will include 35+ hours a week over Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-6pm.

Wages: Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Rockatots Day Nursery opened June 2014. The nursery has 2 Managers, Anneka & Hayley who have a wealth of childcare experience & managing in a nursery setting. It operates in a converted Church hall in a largely residential Plymouth suburb. The building has been renovated to a very high standard.

The nursery offers parents the experience of a highly-qualified team, always eager to discuss progress with the aim of preparing all children well for the challenges of full-time education, thanks to sound physical, social and emotional development.

The nursery is open from 8am to 6pm for 51 weeks of the year. We are closed for a week at Christmas and are closed all bank holidays.

Past Apprentices

The nursery has recently employed Apprentices through Skills Group & are now looking to extend their highly professional team.

On completion of your Level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to developing your skills, experience and knowledge further within the working environment by completing a level 3 qualification.

Skills Required

The successful candidate needs to be outgoing and able to work using own initiative. As an apprentice you will have an interest in the needs of young children & have the ability to work as part of a team & understand the importance of confidentiality.

You will need to have good communication skills when dealing with children and adults, and will be reliable and hardworking.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant will need to be highly reliable and extremely patient, with a kind, fair and supportive approach to be able to work effectively in this child care setting. As an apprentice, you must be able to work with other adults and be able to demonstrate good teamwork skills, and where required, have the ability to work alone in an organised and focused manner. An ability to communicate well with children, staff and parents is essential.

Prior Qualifications

No prior qualifications are required but A-C GCSE Maths and English are desired.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:
◾Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
◾Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
◾Employment Responsibilities and Rights
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
