This is an exciting opportunity for two Bricklaying Apprentice’s to join the busy team of Dan Bickford in Plymouth.

The Apprentice’s Role

As an apprentice you will be expected to work long and busy hours on a large construction site.

You will learn and be expected to complete general labouring duties including tidying the work area, applying and sealing foundations with materials that are damp-resistant and spreading and removing excess mortar, checking brick alignments, applying bricks, blocks and pavers in lanes or decorate patterns or designs. In addition, you will be using brick-cutting machines to cut and shape bricks and building arches, brick structures and any additional tasks required.

Working Hours: The average working week will be 40 hours, Monday – Friday. The working hours may vary depending on work load.

Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Dan is a well established bricklayer who completed an apprenticeship 10 years ago. Dan has a wealth of experience and thriving business, which is looking to expand and have two apprentices join his small but busy team. Dan is based in the north of the city but works on sites in Plymouth and across the south west.

The successful applicants will progress on to the level 3 trowel occupation once completed the level 2 qualification, to further enhance their skills.

Skills Required

You will have good listening and communication skills to be considered for the role. You will be committed to completing the qualification and be willing to learn.

Personal Qualities

You will be hard working, reliable and enthusiastic. You will have a general interest in the construction trade and a team player.

Prior Qualifications

The successful candidate will not need to have A-C at GCSE in English and Maths but will need to work towards the functional skills equivalent during the qualification.

The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
◾Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
