A well-established employer is looking to take on an apprentice to join their experienced team dealing in all aspects of the building trade including new builds. The employer undertakes work in Devon & Cornwall area and is currently based at the new Sherford development.
The Apprentice’s Role
As the bricklaying apprentice you will learn every aspect of construction site work specialising in brick and block work. You will learn how to use specialist hand tools, how to build arches and brick structures along with repairing and restoring brick structures.
You will work to specific time deadlines on large construction sites while using excellent hand to eye coordination. You will work along side a qualified member of staff who will teach you how to correctly mix up appropriate cement for laying bricks and blocks to bespoke orders.
Working Hours: You will be working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm.
Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Dan has actively supported the apprenticeship program for a number of years and has taking on several apprentices who have all successfully achieved the goals to become qualified bricklayers.
Dan has worked as a bricklaying contractor for approximately 10 years working mainly on new build sites. He has a good wealth of knowledge and achieves and maintains a high standard of work.
Dan has had a number of apprentices in the past, all of which have successfully achieved their apprenticeships. His most recent apprentice has recently completed his Level 3, and still works with Dan.
Once having completed your level 2 apprenticeship, you will progress onto the advanced level 3 qualification and have the opportunity to work full-time for the company.
You will have a clear focus on what you want to do and show motivation and good time keeping skills. You will also need to have an ability to cope with the physical demands of the role.
Transport is preferable, but not a requirement and being able to use their own initiative is essential.
You will be hard working with the ability to use your own initiative. The successful candidate would have to display an eagerness to learn and listen to instruction. You will also have to be a good time keeper.
Qualifications required for this role include GCSE’s grades A –E in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer#. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
