Painting and Decorating Apprentice

DCMS are looking to recruit a new painting and decorating apprentice to their supportive team, the potential candidate will be professional and passionate about working within the construction industry.

The Apprentice’s Role

As the apprentice you will be partnered with a mentor who you will work closely with and collect you each day, you will be shown all aspects of the job role which will vary from general repairs, installation of goods, painting and decoration. When on larger projects the apprentice will work with a full team of staff to deliver a high standard of work. Most of the projects is commercial working in offices and public buildings, or private homes however DCMS also complete a lot of specialist work in Police & Custodial services. Anyone who works for the company would have to be vetted as this will grant them access to the police stations.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm (40 hours a week).

Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

An opportunity for progressing onto a level 3 advanced apprenticeship maybe an available should the right candidate show the correct skills and work ethic.

Skills Required

You will need to be polite and hardworking, you will be expected to work long hours and the work will at times be hard and physical, you will be working in a small close team therefore you will need to be a good team player. You will be working in people's homes therefore you will need to be responsible at all times.

Personal Qualities

You will need to be friendly and approachable, an excellent team player and have extreme attention to detail. You will need to be responsible and trustworthy at times and take direction well.

Prior Qualities

Qualifications are not essential however a level of English and Maths would be desirable.

The Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating consists of:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations – Painter
◾Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Attendance is required at our training centre for one day a week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on site and you will have site visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre you will be carrying out various theory and practical modules required for the apprenticeship course. You will learn all the skills necessary and gain the necessary knowledge that will help you throughout your apprenticeship.

You will learn how to prepare areas, spray doors, ceilings and walls, wallpapering, marble graining as well as constructing and using scaffold towers and platforms.

Throughout your training you will supervised by your designated assessor, who will teach you the necessary skills to help you when you return to the site with your employer.

As an additional qualification you will achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health & Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

Skills Group will also support you through your CSCS test to obtain your CSCS card. This confirms that individuals working in the building environment have the necessary competence, and shows the employer that you have the correct qualification to work on-site.
