KPT (SW) require an apprentice carpenter to join their established company based in Plymouth.
The Apprentice’s Role
The successful candidate will need to be physically fit as this role can be demanding. Full training and supervision will be given throughout the apprenticeship by a qualified member of staff. You will be learning and developing new hand skills and carrying out duties such as constructing wooden frameworks using a wide range of specialised hand & power tools.
You will also be shown how to use specific measuring tools, interpret and follow plans to suit the required job. The candidate will construct wooden frameworks and be shown how to calculate and cut correct angles and joints, so you will need to show good attention to detail. You will learn how to hang doors, fit architraves and skirting boards.
The company covers a wide range of other work involved in construction, therefore you may be required to carry out other duties associated with the building trade.
You will be required to keep your work area clean and tidy, and ensure that all tools used are put away correctly.
You will also be required to follow health and safety procedures at all times.
Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm. This may vary slightly depending on workload and travel time.
Wages: £140.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.
KPT SW have over 35 years experience in the construction trade. Peter, one of the directors of the company started as an apprentice himself over 35 years ago and over the years he has built up this hugely successful company.
The company have now branched out into bespoke sheds, summerhouses and fencing etc. They have found this to be highly successful in the market and are now looking to recruit an apprentice to help in this sector.

On completion of your level 2 qualification in carpentry, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the advanced level 3 apprenticeship.
You must have good hand-eye coordination skills and have a very focused approach to every part of the job role. Excellent timekeeping and attendance are also important as some early starts may be required.
You will need to have good communication skills and the ability to work on your own initiative.
The successful apprentice will need to be reliable, self motivated and enthusiastic. You will also need to be physically fit as the role can be demanding at times, so a high level of stamina is required to succeed. You must be enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy working outdoors as this will be required.
You must show a keen interest in the Carpentry/Construction trade to progress in your chosen career.
Qualifications required for this role include GCSE’s grades A – E in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

Whilst at our training centre you will learn the skills and gain experience that will help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the remainder will be practical.
As part of attending Skills Group for your apprenticeship we will also arrange for you to work towards achieving your CSCS on-line test giving you the opportunity to apply for your CSCS Card. This confirms that individuals working in the building environment have the necessary competence, to carry out site work with the employer.
In addition to your training, Skills Group will give you the opportunity to achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
