Roberts Flooring based in Exeter, are looking to expand their specialist team of floorlayers and recruit a young person to undertake a floorlaying apprenticeship.
The Apprentice’s Role
The successful candidate will learn via one-to-one training, guidance and supervision with an experienced colleague covering all areas of flooring as you embark on your flooring career. It is very important to have a professional, focused approach in all the duties that you carry out.
Floorlaying is a hugely varied trade and you will work with many materials such as carpet, vinyl and floor tiles to name a few. You will learn to use specialist tools safely and correctly, under the supervision of fully qualified floorlayers. You will develop your new skills both in the workplace as well as when you visit the Skills Group training centre. Whilst at the training centre, each apprentice will have the opportunity to utilise our limitless materials and resources.
Roberts Flooring work on various premises such as; new build houses, schools, bars, universities and nursing homes. Each day will differ from the last.
You must adhere to health and safety in the workplace at all times and help ensure the smooth running of every project in order to complete work to schedules. You will be required to keep all work areas clean and tidy after each job, and ensure that all tools are in their rightful place at the end of each day. You must wear the appropriate personal protective equipment used within this role each day.
The work is often of a strenuous nature with a lot of lifting so you will have a good level of fitness for the role. As you develop in the trade you will need to have a keen eye for detail and take pride in a job well done in order to keep the good name of the company that they have established over many years in the profession.
The successful candidate will need to hold a valid UK driving license and due to the machinery being used the employer are looking to hire someone aged 18 or over.
Working Hours: The required working hours will be Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. You must be flexible with the working hours as some jobs may require later finishing times to complete the work for the client.
Wages: £147.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Roberts Flooring was founded in 1989 and has gained an enviable reputation for quality, expertise and extensive knowledge of the flooring trade. Their staff are all fully compliant with CSCS and are all CRB checked.
Their work covers a large geographical area, although mainly based around the South West, with branches in Exeter, Plymouth and Redruth. They are also ISO 9001 registered, members of the Contract Flooring Association.
Roberts Flooring have previously taken on 4 apprentices through Skills Group, 2 of which have achieved their level 2 apprenticeship in flooring and are still working for the company to date. The other 2 are still in training.

On completion of your level 2 qualification in floorcoverings, you will be qualified and have the opportunity to stay with the employer to further your career and gain more experience in the trade. You must show the desire and motivation to progress towards your chosen future career.
As you will be dealing with customers you will need good communication skills, be well mannered and presentable. Above all, you must be trustworthy when
working in customers’ homes and dealing with other people.
If you are hard working and enjoy physical work then this is the position for you. Good hand skills and an enjoyment of practical hands-on learning will put you in the best position to excel in flooring.
No experience is necessary but you need to show a keen interest in the flooring sector and enjoy a physical role, with an ability to use your own initiative when required.
You will be required to show a keen interest in learning a hugely varied trade where no two weeks are the same. You must also be trustworthy as you work in
homes of customers. Good timekeeping is a must and a degree of flexibility is required as your working day finishes when the job is complete.
Your work will require a keen eye for detail, to be able to work to high standards and take pride in your work. If you are able to work in a physical role and still produce a good level of work then floorlaying is the profession for you.
GCSE Maths and English, A-E grades are preferred for this vacancy. As you will be dealing with measurements and invoices, you will need a good knowledge of English and Maths.

Attendance is required at our our Skills Group training centre on 1 week block release sessions, every 8 weeks as part of your training course. When you are with us you learn sub-floor preparation, carpet fitting, floor tiling, impervious and vinyl to help develop your hand skills and these sessions are set out over six visits.
We provide your accommodation, food and collection to and from the training centre whilst with us for these weeks. You have the opportunity to carry out tasks using our indispensable high quality materials ensuring when you return to your employer the following week you have improved your hand skills as well as having a greater knowledge of each area of floorlaying.
You will be supported throughout your training by one of our dedicated assessors. As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
