Russells Flooring Ltd, are looking for a young person to join their team to start their flooring career for a bright future in this industry and learn first hand the skills required to succeed.
The Apprentice’s Role
The apprentice will be required to carry out a variety of tasks across the business. Predominately you will be working in the flooring sector, however on occasions working in the showroom getting to know the materials and ropes of the business could be a requirement.
You will be taught everything from how to measure up a job, carrying out quotes and speaking to customers to fitting the high quality flooring products available such as Karndean and Amtico, which are two of the leading vinyl manufactures in the industry.
The majority of the work carried out is on domestic properties, however there will be site work occasionally. Materials used will be carpets, vinyl’s, luxury vinyl tiles, laminate and safety flooring.
You will see the job start to finish with moving furniture and ripping up old flooring, preparing the floor for floorcoverings, observing the qualified fitters and learning the ropes so when you are more knowledgeable you can undertake flooring application yourself. You will also need to tidy up your working area making sure that all tools and equipment are put back in their rightful place.
Everything you learn in the workplace will be mirrored at our training centre which you attend on block release sessions for one week at a time every 8 weeks on 6 – 8 occasions. You will have the opportunity to use our high quality indispensable materials to practice flooring preparation and application until the job is to a high standard. You will learn the knowledge behind what you are doing at the workplace and gain skills to improve your hand skills to carry out more and more tasks at work.
Working Hours: The typical working hours are 8.30am to 5pm. This may vary depending on the job in hand. You may finish earlier in the day and start earlier the following, but notice will be given for working hours.
Wages: £140.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Russells Flooring Ltd are based in Plympton, Plymouth, supply and sit a complete range of domestic and commercial grade flooring, including carpets and vinyl's.
They have built long established trading relationships with leading flooring manufactures, and are able to offer competitive prices on all jobs regardless of size because of this.
They supply carpets from high quality manufactures throughout the Southwest UK, such as woven and tufted carpet; twist, loop and velvet carpet piles; plain, striped, Berber and Saxony styles; wool mix carpets, natural and man-made fibre carpets and a choice of carpet performance and grading. This enables them to tailor the material to each customers needs.
Russells Flooring cover all of Plymouth as well as work just outside such as, Yelverton, Tavistock, Kingsbridge and the Torbay area. They do cover further afield if business needs arise in those areas.
On completion of your level 2 qualification in floorcoverings, you will be qualified and have the opportunity to stay with the employer to further your career and gain more experience in the trade. You must show the desire and motivation to progress towards your chosen future career.
For this position you need to have good communication skills as you will be talking to customers and on occasions working in the showroom. The ideal candidate will have good English and Maths for using the computers for quotes and measuring up rooms to work out square metres and how much material is needed.
You must be honest and reliable as well as having motivation and self awareness on the tasks you are undertaking.
You must be able to take instruction on tasks required to be carried out for the day, be able to keep in line with health and safety requirements and company policies and procedures on jobs.
The ideal candidate must be easy to take to and able to communicate openly with people whether it's colleagues, or customers.
A basic knowledge in English and Maths is essential, and A-C grades are desirable but not a must.
The Apprenticeship in Floorcovering consists of:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations
◾Level 2 Diploma in Floorcovering – Textile and Impervious
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding
Attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre on 1 week block release sessions, every 8 weeks as part of your training course. When you are with us you learn sub-floor preparation, carpet fitting, floor tiling, impervious and vinyl to help develop your hand skills and these sessions are set out over six visits.
We provide your accommodation, food and collection to and from the training centre whilst with us for these weeks. You have the opportunity to carry out tasks using our indispensable high quality materials ensuring when you return to your employer the following week you have improved your hand skills as well as having a greater knowledge of each area of floorlaying.
You will be supported throughout your training by one of our dedicated assessors. As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
