Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury School Sports Network, are looking to take on a School Sports Network Apprentice.

The Apprentice’s Role

The apprentice will be an integral part of the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury School Sport Network (SSN) team, improving the level of PE and school sport across the area. The apprentice will work in specific primary schools as well as within the SSN team assisting in programmes in primary, secondary and special schools throughout the network.

The apprenticeship programme will include being involved in national and local programmes, school sports festivals and cluster events, School Games competitions, supporting major network events, placement opportunities in local schools, as well as working in the Network’s coaching team and supporting community based holiday camps. This apprenticeship is an exciting opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people, inspiring them to get more involved in physical activity and promoting positive experiences within a school environment.

You will be involved in a variety of duties, which will include assisting in the creation of a fun, positive, safe and inclusive learning environments, supporting small groups and individuals in the teaching environment and setting up activities, clearing away resources, looking after all sports equipment and maintaining wall displays etc. as guided by teaching staff.

You will be coordinating off-site sporting events and developing and assisting with the provision of lunchtime and after school sports clubs, including Change 4 Life Clubs. Part of your role will also include being willing to accompany students on educational visits, outings and sporting events as supervised by the teacher or senior person responsible. You will be developing positive relationships and acting as a role model to others at all times, as well as acting as an ambassador for the school and the School Sport Network. Part of your role will also include assisting with the organisation and delivery of various events across primary, secondary & special schools.

In addition, you will be involved in administration tasks which will include letter writing, bookings, transport arrangements, marketing, social media etc.

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Working hours will generally be between the hours of 8.30am to 4.30pm, however some weekend work and flexibility may be required from time to time.

Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury School Sport Network is an organisation committed to improving the level of PE and School Sport in Primary, Secondary, and Special Schools within the area. The objective is to create a sustainable and coherent infrastructure that nurtures the implementation of high quality provision within the network's schools, having a positive impact on the lives of the young people within the network.

The Network works within the School Games structure delivering high quality competitive sporting opportunities for pupils, as well as furthering leadership opportunities for young people, and offering expert support and training for primary schools. They have been fortunate in Cheltenham with being able to sustain a similar structure to that of the former SSP (School Sports Partnership). Acquiring funding from the School Games and Primary School Sport Premium, the SSN's objectives have altered slightly to align with the ones of these streams, but the overall goal of improving opportunities for all pupils to participate within PE and School Sport remains intact.

The School Sport Network hub site is the newly built All Saints' Academy. All Saints' Academy is a £24 million new build school which has replaced Christ College and Cheltenham Kingsmead. The Academy has fantastic facilities and is used for meetings, competitions and festivals and CPD courses organised by the network.

Specific progression routes envisaged for the successful candidate include:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport
  • Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism
  • Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership

Skills Required

A full, clean driving license will be required, as the role will involve travelling between local schools and events, in addition to a clean DBS certificate.

Skills, abilities and personal qualities required includes experience of working with children and young people within physical activity, sport and education. You must be able to interact and communicate appropriately with pupils, parents, school staff and colleagues and have experience and the ability to work across a range of PE and sport activities i.e. Level 1 and 2 NGB awards.

You must have the enthusiasm to motivate and inspire pupils, to ensure they enjoy sport and strive towards fulfilling their true potential. You will have the ability to work as part of a team as well as being able to use own initiative and work independently.

The ideal candidate will be organised, reliable with excellent time keeping, be supportive to pupils’ needs, a strong communicator, flexible, a good team player and hard working.

Experience of working within a sporting, educational or administrative context would be advantageous, however a determination to see young people participate and succeed in sport is of the utmost importance. Strong problem solving, communication and team work skills will form a key element of the position, with the successful candidate anticipated to regularly utilise their skills in forward planning and initiative. The ability to work effectively as part of a team will form an essential part of this role, with the ability to adapt plans and have the foresight to potential obstacles being of paramount importance.

Individuals with outstanding organisational skills are sought, however further training will be provided to support the long term development of the right candidate.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant will need to have strong communication skills which can inspire and engage young people from the outset. A caring and compassionate approach to sensitive issues may also be required on occasions, in addition to the ability to be flexible across the network. The responsibilities associated with this role mean that a proactive individual with good initiative would be well suited to this post.

Furthermore, the successful applicant will be an organised, logical and innovative individual who has a natural infinity in creating engaging written pieces for the network's website and press releases. Good timekeeping and an optimistic approach will all be traits sought in candidates who can act as professional role models at all times. You will also need to be confident, a good team player and hard working. The network are seeking an outgoing and inspiring individual who can raise the aspirations of others and encourage pupils to fulfil their true potential through the medium of sport.

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required as full training will be provided. It would however be extremely advantageous to possess qualifications relevant to sport, in addition to administrative experience and a critical eye for detail. Please note that strong literacy and numeracy skills will also be beneficial.

The Apprenticeship in Physical Education and School Sport includes:

  • Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership (QCF)
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport (QCF)
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of your training will be delivered on-site by the employer at your workplace, and you will have regular visits every six to eight weeks by your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progress throughout your apprenticeship programme.
