Woodlands S.E.N School are looking to take on two teaching assistant apprentice’s to provide classroom support.

The Apprentice’s Role

The successful candidate will be required to prepare the classroom for lessons, clear away afterwards and produce displays of pupils work. You will be required to concentrate for most of the morning or afternoon whilst observing and assisting the pupils during lessons. You will also be expected to support pupils in water-based activities.

You will provide specialist support for pupils, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and appropriate access to learning activities. You will assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the management of the learning environment in the classroom. You will also assist the teacher and HLTA with the planning of learning activities, assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes and undertake pupils record keeping which will include recording pupils responses to learning activities.

Along with this, you will promote pupils’ self-esteem and independence skills and work closely with other colleagues in the classroom to deliver personalised learning plans. You will promote positive pupil behaviour, deal promptly with conflicts and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

The successful candidate will also provide assistance with pupil first aid and welfare issues e.g. look after sick pupils and undertake some routine medical support under the direction and supervision of nursing staff. You may be required to demonstrate own role tasks to new starters or less experienced members of staff and assist in the handling of small amounts of money related to various school events, which are then handed over to school office staff for processing.

Working Hours: You will be working 30 – 40 hours per week, ranging between the hours of 8am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Specific shifts will be negotiated with the school.

Wages: £148.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Woodlands S.E.N School are a foundation school, offering education for 85 children between the ages of 2 and 19 years with complex physical and sensory difficulties. Many pupils also have medical needs and other difficulties that may affect their learning.

The school is a resource for the whole of the South West peninsula; their pupils come from Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall to learn. Children’s health is supported by their Nursing team and a range of staff from the NHS, Childrens’ Integrated Disability Team, Livewell South West and staff from neighbouring authorities. Their staff work closely with therapists to get the best outcome for individual pupils.

Past Apprentices

This employer has had apprentices in the past and currently has apprentices in the school. The school has a great attitude and support network for the apprentices that are taken on.

This employer encourages the learners to progress and the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to work towards a level 3 qualification after successful competition of the level 2.

Skills Required

The successful candidate will be required to use interpretation skills in order to solve straightforward problems, you will be advising and guiding the pupils on a daily basis, therefore effective written and oral communication skills are required to liaise with pupils, other staff, parents and outside agencies and professionals.

Good keyboard skills is required to support the use of computers in learning activities.

Personal Qualities

You will be a team player, patient and punctual. Confidentiality and reliability is essential as well as a strong work ethic.

Prior Qualifications

Maths and English A-C grade are required.

The Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Functional Skills in English (Level 2), Maths (Level 1) and ICT (Level 1)
