The Apprentice’s Role
The role of the apprentice will be challenging but rewarding. A big smile and a cheerful personality, an ability to engage with clients of all ages and backgrounds, to work well as part of a team working towards a common goal are the essential criteria for any applicant.
During the working day, all apprentices are expected to meet and greet clients, offer and serve refreshments, remove cloaks etc. Ensure client comfort in the Salon and undertake shampooing, conditioning and treatment services at the basin. An excellent knowledge of the professional product range, its active ingredients and prescribed outcomes will be expected along with all housekeeping duties. The applicant will receive training with our Client Management System, send and receive emails, confirm online bookings, take payment and make future bookings. They will also be required to ‘up sell’ retail lines and additional services offered by other departments within the Salon.
Working Hours: You will work 40 hours per week. You will also be required to work a late night one day a week. You will; be required to get yourself to Ivybridge for a 9.00am start and two 9.00pm finished each week.
Wages: £136.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any hours worked above 40 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.
Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

A Salon Called Fish have been taking on apprentices for over 16 years, with two new apprentices joining their team every year. Over these years, those apprentices who have shown above the rest have been offered employment within the firm and now make up the majority of the mid-range styling team.
After successfully completing your level 1 apprenticeship, selected candidates may be offered a 12 month improver with retainer within the Salon as a 'Graduate Stylist'. During this period the candidate will be expected to grow clientele, develop their skills and effectively and successfully run a column efficiently. Take home OTE after year three are expected to average around £350/400 pw – successful candidates after year three may be offered a full time self employed contract.
You will have good grammatical and numeracy skills, be well spoken with an excellent telephone manner. You will show initiative and have the ability to identify what needs to be done, be a leader and a strong team player who is reliable and determined.
You will have good self esteem, respect for others, a determination to achieve and the ability to offer help to others are all essential qualities required for this role. Excellent personal hygiene and appearance, reliable and trustworthy, an ability to remain focussed on the goal regardless of the hurdles which may be in the way are essential if you are to succeed as a member of the team.
No formal qualifications are required for this role.
The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:
Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 3 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.
Your duties will vary from day to day, and throughout your learning process you will work closely with a qualified stylist from Chantell's Hair Advice Centre who will support you in your learning. The successful apprentice will also have the opportunity to attend the training academy for master classes if authorised by the employer.
As an additional qualification Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
