Cutting Edge Salon are looking to take on a hairdressing apprentice to join their team in Ottery St Mary.
The Apprentices Role
The successful apprentice will learn to carry out many duties for this position which will include meeting and greeting clients, shampooing and removing colour, conditioning, drying and styling hair. With a combination of off-the-job training and on-site support within the workplace, you will learn many hairdressing skills which you will be able to put into practice throughout your training.
You will study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection. There is also the option to learn about promoting products and perming.
During your training you will eventually master colouring, cutting, setting and styling skills through ongoing practice sessions on models in preparation for your assessment on clients. We recognise that salons are becoming more reliant on technology to communicate with their clients, and to promote their salon services, styling team and latest offers, our apprenticeship training includes an ICT element that enables learners to develop their skills to use social networks in a safe and professional way when required.
You will be supervised throughout your training by a skilled member of their team, where as part of your duties you must keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the day. You will also be made aware of company processes and procedures including Health and Safety in the workplace.
Working Hours: Your working hours will be 40 hours per week (5days) between Monday – Saturday, Working one late night and a day off in the week.
Wages: £140.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.
Cutting Edge in Ottery St Mary has been established since 2004. Within 4 weeks of the company starting up, another local salon had closed, resulting in the owner having to take on an apprentice Adele, to cope with the influx of new clients, who is still working for Cutting Edge today. In total they now employ 5 staff at the Ottery branch to meet all their clients needs.
They consider themselves very lucky to have been looking after the hair of their clients for the last 9 years, and are very proud to be at the centre of a lovely town, in the hustle and bustle of the nearby shopping centre that is Heavitree. They offer a full range of hair and beauty treatments, including clip in hair extensions to sunbeds.
The company have taken on many apprentices with Skills Group, those of which are still working at the salon. This is great opportunity for another apprentice to join a great team in a busy salon, who is highly motivated and has a willingness to succeed in their chosen career.
Once you have completed the Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the higher advanced Level 3 apprenticeship. By doing so, you will gain the additional skills and knowledge to further your career opportunities in your chosen career.

The ideal candidate will need to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deliver exceptional customer service at all times. You must have the motivation and passionate about creativity and the hairdressing industry to succeed in this exciting role.
Good organisational skills and a focused approach to all the tasks that you are given are also desirable for this role, together with good timekeeping and attendance.
The successful candidate will need to be warm and friendly, with a pleasant personality when interacting with clients and colleagues. You must be honest and reliable and show the enthusiasm and willingness to learn and develop in this exciting career opportunity. You will need to be able to work well within a friendly team and be able to use your own initiative when the salon is busy, to assist the other stylists.
Qualifications desirable for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent such as functional skills, but these are not essential.

Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.
As an additional qualification Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
