Spencer’s Hair Design in Plymouth, are looking for a salon junior to join their friendly team.
The Apprentice’s Role
The ideal candidate will be carrying out a variety of tasks throughout their day in the salon. Your duties will include meeting and greeting clients, scheduling salon appointments for the stylists and dealing with telephone enquiries. You will also be carrying out shampooing and conditioning services for clients, and will be trained to mix and apply colour treatments under the supervision of other stylists.
During your training you will learn about hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on the hair and scalp, and the principles of colour selection and application. Learning the foundations will enable you progress to blow drying and styling, colouring and cutting, so that you are able to practice your skills on models.
In addition, you will learn about the salon’s retail range of products and how these are used to maintain and enhance the client’s hair, and support their aftercare routines in between salon visits.
You will be supervised throughout your training by a skilled member of their team, where as part of your duties you must keep the work area clean and tidy. You will also be made aware of company processes and procedures including health and safety in the workplace.
Working Hours: You will be working 40 hours per week between Monday – Saturday. Shift patterns will be arranged at the start of the apprenticeship.
Wages: £148.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

The salon has been established for 8 years and has experience with working with trainees. They have had many apprentices that have successfully completed their training and have remained in the salon.
Spencer’s Hair Design are a unisex salon who have a mixed clientèle who are local to the salon, and also clients that travel from all areas of Plymouth. The salon is modern and friendly and is very busy. Spencer’s is an official retailer of GHD products and uses only the best hair products such as Goldwell and TIGI.
They offer all areas of hair design, the latest colours and creative cuts, perms, shampoos and sets. They also have a beauty room where they offer manicures, waxing, nail extensions and head massage.
Spencer’s have recruited and successfully trained 6 juniors in the past who not only have completed their apprenticeships but have also remained in the salon.
Once you have completed the level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to work towards either a level 2 in barbering or an advanced level 3 in hairdressing.
Excellent communication, high standards of hygiene and appearance and a keen team player are all essential for any salon apprentice. You will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.
Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.
Qualifications required for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent, for example functional skills.

All aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.
As an additional qualification, Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
