Apprenticeship was a great stepping-stone to university

A PLYMOUTH youngster has urged students collecting their A-level results this week to consider doing an apprenticeship before heading off to university.

Jessica York said that opting to do a health and social care apprenticeship after her exams helped her secure a place at university while also gaining valuable experience into her future career.

Jessica, aged 20, was speaking as thousands of Plymouth teenagers prepare to collect their A-level results later this week (August 13).

She said: “I stayed at school to do my A-levels, but didn’t want to rush into doing a degree. I was interested in social care but wanted to try it out first, so I had a look on the internet and found the Skills Group apprenticeships4me website.”

Jessica is now completing her Skills Group apprenticeship with Waypoints dementia care home in Plymouth, before beginning a degree in nursing at Plymouth University in September. She added: “My job at Waypoints is really rewarding. I’m getting loads of experience and earning while I’m learning. Having worked alongside the nurses, I decided to apply for a nursing degree at Plymouth University.

“My apprenticeship helped me get my place, definitely – and when I start my placements I’ll already know how to do lots, like using the hoist, testing blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and neurological tests.”

Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouth-based Skills Group, said: “It is great to see how Jessica has progressed and gained great experience and training before even embarking on her degree course.

“As well as apprenticeships kick-starting careers, they are a great way of testing out possible career avenues before going on to university or further employment.”
