Cutting-edge skills shown off in Exeter hair competition

Talented trainee hairdressers and barbers from Exeter proved they were a cut above the rest when they took part in the annual Skills Group Hair Competition.

Young apprentices representing local salons battled it out in different categories depending on their level of training and turned out some eye-catching, cutting-edge creations at The Rougemont Hotel in Queen Street, Exeter, on 25th July.

‘A Day At The Races’ was the theme for novice hairdressers who have been in training for less than a year. Molly Bacon, representing Bolts Hair & Body, took this year’s crown with her stylish creation, while Karla Campbell from Daniel K Neaves came second and Marcus Chung from Energy Hair third.

For apprentices who have been in training for more than a year but are yet to achieve their Level 2 qualifications, the theme was ‘Colour Cocktail’. Danielle Sendra from Exeter Hair Academy took first place in the intermediate round, closely followed by Jessica Brockbank from Nu-Yu Hair Salon. Chelsea Swindlehurst, representing Ocean Boutique, was third.

The advanced category, ‘Razor Sharp’, saw super-slick results from apprentices who have completed their Level 2. Taking crowning glory was Grace Mangeng from Energy Hair, with Ella Andrews from Exeter Hair and Beauty coming second.

Louise Harrop, Skills Group’s Service Sector Manager, said: “Competitions are an important part of helping Skills Group apprentices show their employers the range of skills that they have developed during their apprenticeships.

We saw some fantastic creations on the day, which really showed the talent in our region when it comes to Hairdressing and Barbering.”

This year’s judges were Tracie Gunningham, owner of Envy in Plymouth, Kelly Williams, franchisee owner of Toni & Guy, Plymouth, and Hannah Finnimore from Phab Wholesale.
