Ivybridge Community College pupil excels with Skills Group

A Year 11 pupil from Ivybridge Community College has been undertaking vocational training with Skills Group, achieving outstanding results.

Bayley Williams, 15, has been given the opportunity to try his hand at various construction trades, including bricklaying, at Skills Group’s specialist construction training centre in Plympton.

Despite having not enjoyed learning in a classroom environment, the GCSE-age pupil has already produced bricklaying work of a Level 3 standard with the support of Paul Cassidy, Construction Trainer/Assessor.

Bayley’s work includes a double attached chimney stack 9 courses high, with brick corbelling, chimney flue liners and finishing flaunching. He has also completed a Victorian double archway with brick-on-edge cill, in addition to dog toothing topped with brick-on-edge finish.

Paul Cassidy said: “Bayley has gone above and beyond for his age. This is something we would usually expect of a school leaver working towards their Level 3, which is an Advanced qualification.”

Malcolm Collins, Deputy Principal at Ivybridge Community College, said: “We’re delighted to get a student on a pathway that has allowed them to thrive in an environment that they enjoy.”

Bayley said: “I’ve really enjoyed learning practical skills outside of the classroom. At Skills Group, trainers and learners have mutual respect for each other, and I can definitely see myself going into bricklaying in the future.”

Skills Group will be at Ivybridge Community College Careers Fair on Wednesday 30 November – come and find us in the dining hall at stand 19.
