Plymouth's trainee hairdressers with a razor-sharp eye for detail

Colour and creativity was the order of the day as apprentice hairdressers and barbers battled it out in the annual Skills Group Hairdressing and Barbering Competition.

Young apprentices representing salons across Plymouth competed in different themed categories according to their level of training in the day-long event at the Holiday Inn.

Clinching first place in the novice ‘Day at the Races’ category, for youngsters who have been in training for less than a year, was Lauren Davis of Envy hair salon in Plymouth. Amy-Mai Fox of Toni & Guy was runner up and third place went to Joe Balsdon of Nick Evangelista Hair & Beauty.

‘Colour Cocktail’ was the theme for the intermediate hairdressers, with Lara Donnelly of Arena Creative Hair Salon taking top spot. In second place was Jordan Perks of Peace Hair and Beauty, and in third, Teylor Shorrock of Jules Studio.

For the intermediate barbers, the theme was ‘City Slickers’. Taking the crown with his sleek design was Josh Bunker of Cutting Company Hair and Beauty. Closely behind him in second place was Ashley Abel of Mutley Barbers.

‘Razor Sharp’ was the theme for the advanced category, with Lacey Keating of Chameleon Hair Design proving she was a cut above the rest. In second place was Abi O’Leary of Salon @ No 6 and, in third, Rhianne Cawse of Envy.

Louise Harrop, Skills Group’s Service Sector Manager, said: “Competitions are an important part of helping Skills Group apprentices show their employers the range of skills they have developed during their apprenticeships.

It is so exciting to see how the next generation of hairdressers and barbers interpreted the competition themes, coming up with some stunning designs.”

The panel of judges was made up of experienced hairdressers including Nathan Plumridge, owner of Energy Hair in Topsham, Donna Wilson, owner of K D Styling in Tavistock, and Tinamaria Clifford from Newton Abbot Hair Academy.
