Michaela Phillips, Plymouth Argyle

Before starting my apprenticeship I had applied for a job with Plymouth Argyle Community Trust, but I didn’t have enough experience, so I went to Canada to stay with a friend who coaches football. When I returned to Plymouth I contacted Skills Group who helped me to get an apprenticeship with Plymouth Argyle.

My apprenticeship really helped me with my confidence. I didn’t think I was any good as a coach, but I’ve been working as a community coach with kids in deprived areas, helping to re-engage them through football. This has been really rewarding, but also – with the support of Argyle and the Skills Group staff, I now know I can coach. I also go in to primary schools now, I’m the only female coach at Argyle and I’m on the Plymouth Argyle Ladies’ team.
